M-Series™ Hybrid 2″

The Ultimate Solution for Hospitals, MERV 14A/16A, ASHRAE 170/241 & CSA Z317.2 compliant, with 54% fan energy savings over standard hospital filter trains.

The M-Series™ Hybrid 2″ is ECOairflow's solution specifically engineered for hospital treatment rooms, operating rooms and critical healthcare spaces. It is available in MERV 14A and MERV 16A configurations and delivers Appendix-J certified performance, power-on and power-off, under ASHRAE 170.1/CSA Z317.2. Its patent-pending single-pad design eliminates the need for separate pre-filters, dramatically reducing pressure drop and the energy penalty that typically accompanies mandatory ASHRAE 170 compliance.

Two stages, one cabinet

Why the M-Series is the hybrid

A mechanical collector sits in front of the patented EPF core inside a single 2″ cabinet, which is what lets it hold performance power-on and power-off under the Appendix J protocol.

The Hospital Filtration Challenge

Engineered for Healthcare Safety, ASHRAE 170 & 241

ASHRAE 170 requires high-efficiency filtration (MERV 14A/16A/HEPA) for patient safety. Traditional filter systems impose high pressure drops, often 0.6–1.2 in. w.g., which increase fan energy, shorten filter life, and elevate operating costs. The M-Series resolves this conflict.

  • The Pathogen Gap: MERV ratings stop at 0.3 microns, providing no visibility into performance at PM0.1, the size range most associated with airborne infection risk under ASHRAE 241. Viruses, wildfire smoke, and industrial/vehicular ultrafine particles behave more like gases in this range and can defeat traditional body defences.
  • The M-Series Advantage: Independent testing shows the Model 2300 M-Series captures 74.73% of PM0.1, compared to 49.19% for HEPA, under controlled test conditions.
  • ASHRAE 170/241 Compliant: Provides ASHRAE 170.1 / CSA Z317.2 compliant filtration for all treatment areas. Superior ultrafine capture supports infection risk mitigation strategies under ASHRAE 241.
  • Appendix J Certified: All M-Series filters are tested and certified to Appendix J protocols, confirming consistent in-situ performance over their entire lifecycle, clinical safety never wavers.
The ECOairflow Energy Savings Story

54% Fan Energy Reduction Over 12 Weeks

An independent 12-week study compared the energy consumption of an ASHRAE 170-compliant 2-bank filter configuration (MERV 8 pre-filter + MERV 14 bag filter system) versus a single bank of Model 2300 M-Series filters in identical air handlers. The result was unambiguous.

12,795 kWh
Conventional 2-bank hospital filter, 12 weeks
5,940 kWh
ECOairflow M-Series, 12 weeks total
  • Constant performance: The traditional filter train showed a sharp increase in energy demand as it loaded. The M-Series maintains nearly constant power levels throughout the 12-week cycle.
  • Patent-pending single pad design: Combines a MERV 8-equivalent pre-filter with a high-performance MERV 14A or 16A final filter in a single pad, greatly reducing overall pressure drop.
  • Eliminates maintenance hurdles: No need for separate pre-filters, reducing labour costs. The robust 2″ aluminum frame is designed for easy media pad replacement.
  • Simple conversion: In compliant applications, the M-Series replaces both the pre-filter and final filter, the Stage 2 bag filter array can be eliminated entirely, reducing pressure drop and simplifying maintenance.
Compliance Guide

Hospital Filtration Standards, ASHRAE 170

The M-Series™ Hybrid 2″ meets ASHRAE 170 filtration requirements across all treatment space types.

Space Type ASHRAE 170 Requirement M-Series Configuration
Emergency, invasive procedure & higher-risk treatment rooms MERV 8 / MERV 14A M-Series MERV 14A (single pad, replaces both stages)
Operating rooms & comparable high-acuity procedural spaces MERV 8 / MERV 16A M-Series MERV 16A (single pad, replaces both stages)
Protective environment rooms HEPA combinations M-Series MERV 16A + HEPA (M-Series eliminates energy penalty of MERV 8 pre-filter)

Even when HEPA must be part of the solution, the M-Series eliminates the "energy penalty" a typical MERV 8/MERV 14 pre-filter adds to the filtration system.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

The M-Series™ Hybrid 2″ uses a patent-pending pad that combines a MERV 8-equivalent pre-filter with a high-performance MERV 14A or 16A final filter in a single pad. Independent testing shows the Model 2300 M-Series captures 74.73% of PM0.1 particles vs. 49.19% for HEPA, under controlled test conditions. HEPA uses a tight pleated weave to sieve particles mechanically, which creates much higher static pressure drop (0.6–1.2 in. w.g. typical). The M-Series achieves superior PM0.1 performance at a pressure drop of only 0.13–0.37 in. w.g.

Yes. The M-Series™ Hybrid 2″ provides ASHRAE 170.1 / CSA Z317.2 compliant filtration for all hospital treatment areas. The MERV 14A configuration covers emergency, invasive procedure and higher-risk treatment rooms; the MERV 16A configuration covers operating rooms and high-acuity procedural spaces. All M-Series filters are tested and certified to Appendix J protocols, confirming consistent in-situ performance over their entire lifecycle. The product also supports ASHRAE 241 infection risk mitigation strategies.

An independent 12-week study compared an ASHRAE 170-compliant 2-bank system (MERV 8 pre-filter + MERV 14 bag filter) against a single bank of M-Series filters in identical air handlers. The conventional system consumed 12,795 kWh over 12 weeks; the M-Series consumed 5,940 kWh, a 54% reduction. Because the M-Series combines both filter stages into a single pad, the Stage 2 bag filter array can be eliminated entirely, reducing pressure drop and simplifying maintenance.

No. The M-Series™ Hybrid 2″ exceeds ASHRAE 170 emission standards for both ozone and formaldehyde. It is independently certified as compliant with UL2998 (Zero Ozone Standard), UL867, and CSA 22.2 No. 187. The hermetically sealed electronics never produce ions or corona discharge.

All industry-standard and oversize cabinet sizes are supported, plus odd and exact custom sizes on request. The M-Series pad uses the same permanent 2″ aluminum frame as the commercial Model 2300, so existing Model 2300 frames can be upgraded with M-Series pads without replacing the cabinet. Send the cabinet dimensions and our engineers will quote it.
