Frequently Asked Questions
Does a furnace filter filter smoke?
Yes. A furnace filter can filter smoke when it uses the right technology and MERV rating. ECOairflow's Electronic Polarization Technology (EPT) captures smoke particles — including wildfire black carbon and indoor tobacco or cooking smoke — as small as 0.001 microns, sizes that standard disposable MERV 8 filters cannot trap effectively.
What furnace filter is best for smoke?
For residential smoke filtration, the Dynamo 1" EAC (MERV 12) or Model 1500 (MERV 12) offer the best balance of smoke capture and low pressure drop. For commercial or high-exposure environments, the Dynamo 2" Model 2300 (MERV 14) and M-Series (MERV 14A/16A) deliver the highest smoke and PM0.1 particle removal performance available.
What MERV filter removes smoke?
MERV 11 and above can capture smoke particles, but ultra-fine smoke — including wildfire black carbon (PM0.1 range) — requires more than mechanical filtration. ECOairflow's EPT-powered MERV 11–16 filters use an electromagnetic field to attract and trap smoke particles as small as 0.001 microns, far exceeding what a passive MERV-rated pleated filter captures at the same rating.
How often should I replace my furnace filter if I have smoke exposure?
ECOairflow recommends replacing the glass-fiber pad every 3 months under normal conditions. In areas with heavy wildfire smoke or continuous indoor smoke sources, more frequent replacement may be needed. The permanent housing is a one-time purchase — only the low-cost pad requires periodic replacement, reducing long-term filtration costs significantly.
Can ECOairflow filters capture wildfire smoke?
Yes. ECOairflow filters are specifically effective against wildfire smoke, capturing both black carbon and organic carbon particles from forest fires. Using Electronic Polarization Technology, they trap smoke particles as small as 0.001 microns — including the PM2.5 and PM0.1 fractions most hazardous to respiratory health in wildfire-affected US regions.
Are ECOairflow smoke filters safe to use in occupied homes?
Absolutely. All ECOairflow residential filters are certified to UL 2998 Zero Ozone Verification by Intertek ETL, meaning they emit effectively zero ozone. They exceed US FDA, EPA, NIOSH, CARB, and OSHA ozone standards, making them safe for homes with children, pets, elderly occupants, and individuals with asthma or respiratory sensitivities.
Do ECOairflow filters work with my existing furnace or HVAC system?
ECOairflow electronic air cleaners connect to any standard residential forced-air furnace or air handler via a 24V connection and are available in all industry-standard cabinet sizes plus custom dimensions. Installation by a qualified HVAC contractor is recommended. The permanent housing replaces your existing filter slot, and only the pad is swapped out at maintenance intervals.
